Overview

Korigad Fort Trek from Pune and Mumbai

Beginner-friendly one-day fort trek near Lonavala

Korigad Fort Trek from Pune is a beginner-friendly one-day hill-fort trek near Peth Shahpur, Lonavala and Aamby Valley in Pune district, Maharashtra.

Also known as Koraigad, Koarigad and Kumwarigad, the fort stands on a broad, flat-topped hill surrounded by the Sahyadri landscape.

The trek is especially popular among first-time trekkers because the route is short, clearly defined and supported by stone steps leading towards the main fort gateway.

During the monsoon, water flows over parts of the staircase, the fort walls turn green and mist covers the plateau. In clear weather, visitors can enjoy wide views of the surrounding valleys, Aamby Valley, Mulshi-side hills and nearby Sahyadri ranges.

The fort plateau is much larger than the short climb suggests. Visitors can walk along long stretches of preserved fortification walls and explore two lakes, temples, water structures, gateways and historic cannons.

Korigad is therefore not just a short climb. It offers a complete combination of fort architecture, Maratha history, monsoon scenery, easy trekking and plateau exploration.

The popular trekking route begins near Peth Shahpur village. The trail covers approximately 1.5–2 km one way and normally takes around 1–1.5 hours to reach the fort, depending on fitness, weather and crowding.

The TrekHievers Pune package includes private transportation, breakfast with tea, vegetarian lunch, trek-leader support, local coordination and basic first-aid assistance.

Why you should visit Korigad Fort

Ideal first trek

Korigad is one of the most manageable hill-fort treks near Pune and is suitable for fit beginners, families and first-time trekkers.

Beautiful monsoon staircase

During active rainfall, water flows over the stone steps, creating one of the most photographed sections of the trek.

Well-preserved fort walls

The long fortification wall still surrounds much of the plateau and allows visitors to walk around significant sections of the fort.

Two lakes on the plateau

Korigad has two prominent water bodies on top, adding to the beauty of the otherwise open plateau.

Historic temples

The fort contains the Korai Devi temple along with other shrines associated with Shiva, Vishnu and Ganesh.

Old cannons

Several historic cannons remain on the fort, including the large cannon commonly known as Laxmi Toph.

Panoramic views

Clear weather offers wide views of the Aamby Valley region, nearby hills and the surrounding Maval–Mulshi landscape.

Easy access from Pune

The fort can be completed comfortably as a one-day trip from Pune without overnight travel.

Suitable in multiple seasons

Monsoon offers waterfalls and greenery, while winter provides clearer views and more comfortable plateau exploration.

What makes Korigad Fort special?

Korigad has one of the broadest and best-preserved plateaus among the easier forts near Pune.

Its most important features include:

  • Stone entrance steps
  • Historic fort gateway
  • Long defensive ramparts
  • Bastions
  • Two plateau lakes
  • Korai Devi temple
  • Shiva, Vishnu and Ganesh shrines
  • Historic cannons
  • Laxmi Toph
  • Water-storage structures
  • Seasonal waterfalls
  • Large walking perimeter
  • Views towards Aamby Valley and surrounding hills

Unlike some treks where the summit is only a small viewpoint, Korigad provides enough space and historical structures for meaningful exploration after the climb.

Brief history of Korigad Fort

The exact original construction date of Korigad Fort is not clearly documented, although the fort is generally considered to predate the sixteenth century.

Its location made it strategically important for monitoring routes between the Maval–Mulshi region and the Konkan side.

Korigad became part of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Swarajya in 1657, along with several nearby forts in the Lonavala–Maval region.

The fort remained strategically important because it controlled the Ambavane Ghat region and surrounding movement routes.

In 1818, British forces attacked Korigad during the final conflict between the Maratha power and the British. The fort eventually fell after fighting and damage to its ammunition-storage area.

Today, the fort’s ramparts, temples, lakes, gateways and cannons continue to reflect its military and cultural significance.
